The Harbinger Group's Digital and Social Media Manager, Emily Evans, shares 5 reasons to harness the power of user-generated content (UGC).

In today’s digital marketing landscape, authenticity reigns supreme. Consumers crave genuine connections and brands that resonate with their experiences, and these brands are constantly looking for new ways to make those connections in a crowded market. One powerful tool that has come from these demands is user-generated content (UGC). UGC is original content created and posted by social media users about specific brands. This kind of content can be conveyed through many kinds of formats— from images and videos to product reviews, testimonials, and even podcasts. One of The Harbinger Group’s digital marketing and social media experts, Emily Evans, gave her insights on why brands should be utilizing UGC in their marketing strategies.

1. Building Credibility and Trust through user-generated content (UGC)

The abundance of information presented online today can be overwhelming, so credibility is important for brands looking to earn the trust of their target audiences. UGC serves as a testament to a brand’s authenticity and values.

“One example is how we share content for our client Powering Chicago. Safety is a cornerstone piece of their brand and core message. So, during Construction Safety Week, rather than just say Powering Chicago prioritizes safety, we show HOW their member contractors do that on the job site by reposting those contractors’ social content,” Emily explained. “We choose to share content that features images or videos showing the steps these contractors take to protect their employees and customers on job sites. This helps to foster trust with Powering Chicago’s member contractors because our audience is seeing safe practices in action.”

2. Driving Engagement Through Authenticity in User-Generated Content (UGC)

UGC also helps to drive engagement, the heart of successful digital marketing. Sharing content created by your audience encourages additional audience involvement and attracts interaction from users with similar interests and experiences.

“Aldridge Electric, one of Powering Chicago’s members, shares a lot about safety. When we share their content, we get interaction from Aldridge Electric’s users and audience members as well as Powering Chicago’s. So that leads to higher engagement rates,” said Emily.

Aldridge Electric’s engagement with Powering Chicago’s mission serves as a tangible example of how UGC can drive higher engagement rates and foster deeper connections between brands and their audience.

3. Streamlining Content Creation Efforts through User-Generated Content (UGC)

Time and resources are precious in the fast-paced world of digital marketing. Leveraging user-generated content can save valuable time and resources by allowing brands to share more content efficiently.

“It can be time-consuming to sit down and draft your own original copy and graphics or photos, which of course, is very important to your social media strategy. But UGC can be used as an efficient tool to share additional authentic content. It can also  be more cost-effective.”

With UGC, brands can curate an array of content without the need for an extensive original creation process, thus freeing up resources for other strategic initiatives. This streamlined approach to content creation enables brands to maintain a consistent presence across digital channels while maximizing their impact.

4. Fostering Community and Collaboration with User-Generated Content (UGC)

Community is the core of successful brands, and user-generated content (UGC) is a powerful way to foster connections and collaboration. UGC encourages mutual sharing and collaboration, strengthening relationships with industry partners and stakeholders.

“It fosters that sense of community when you’re sharing each other’s content. It makes me think of Powering Chicago again. We work to share their industry partner’s content, and in turn, they do us a favor and share our content. So it really does help foster relationships on social platforms.”

Powering Chicago’s collaborations with industry partner organizations like Illinois Green Alliance and Illinois Alliance for Clean Transportation exemplify the power of UGC in building community networks and fostering meaningful partnerships.

5. How Can You Encourage User-Generated Content (UGC)?

Since UGC is original content customers create, how can brands encourage people to post? It’s important to entice your audience to create and share content. You can do this through campaign challenges and contest incentives. Maybe you offer enticing prizes like gift cards or merchandise to contest winners who share their top social marketing strategies. Or, you can offer opportunities for participants to be featured in marketing materials or newsletters, further incentivizing engagement and participation.

User-generated content (UGC) isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a strategic tool for brands looking to thrive in today’s digital world. By harnessing the power of UGC, brands can amplify their authenticity, drive engagement, and foster vibrant communities of advocates.
