When you think of an intern, you usually picture someone running to grab the whole office coffee or doing menial tasks that don’t really contribute to their career. But at The Harbinger Group, it’s different.
From day one, I was immersed in meaningful digital marketing projects that challenged me and helped me grow. As I reflect on my internship experience, I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned and developed in such a short time. This opportunity has not only diversified my skill set but has also given me increased confidence in myself and my work.
Real Projects, Real Impact: The Career Shortage Project
One of the first projects I worked on during my internship focused on the digital marketing aspect of addressing the career shortage in certain industries. This research aimed to identify the key factors contributing to the shortage and explore strategies for targeting potential clients through various marketing channels. I analyzed industry trends, reviewed multiple data sources, and gained insights into the challenges companies face when recruiting skilled professionals.
This project was a significant milestone for me. It was the first time I realized that I was doing real, impactful work. At each step of the process, I had the opportunity to meet with Eileen Rochford, our CEO, to discuss my findings. Being trusted with such a meaningful project and speaking directly with the head of our company made me even more motivated and engaged.
Through this experience, I strengthened my research skills, learning how to ask targeted questions, evaluate the credibility of sources, and adapt my methods as new data emerged. It was a hands-on introduction to how digital marketing strategies can be applied to solve real-world business challenges.
Mastering the Art of Digital Marketing Pitching
One of the most rewarding aspects of my internship was pitching to media outlets and university publications for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Leadership. This task required me to step out of my comfort zone and develop my media outreach and pitching skills—a crucial component of digital marketing and PR.
I learned the importance of tailoring my pitch to resonate with each specific contact and continually updating and refining media lists to ensure maximum outreach. Through persistence and consistency in media relations, I was able to secure over 20 pieces of coverage across various platforms, including coverage from award finalists’ and recipients’ alma mater institutions.
This experience taught me the value of strategic communication and adaptability, core elements of effective digital marketing campaigns. Crafting compelling pitches for media outlets provided me with a new perspective on how digital marketing intersects with PR and media outreach, which is an essential skill in today’s fast-paced digital world.
Crafting Compelling Copy: A Key Skill in Digital Marketing
As an intern, I was also responsible for writing copy for social media posts and blog articles. This was a hands-on experience in content creation, a key pillar of any successful digital marketing strategy. Each piece of content required a different approach, ensuring that the tone and style matched the specific needs of the brand or campaign. I learned how to adapt my writing style for different platforms and develop engaging content that connects with audiences.
I also had the opportunity to conduct interviews for blog content, which added depth to my writing and provided valuable firsthand insights. This practical experience helped me understand the nuances of digital marketing, including content strategy, scheduling, and using tools like HubSpot and Sprout Social to manage content calendars and track performance.
Writing copy for digital marketing initiatives wasn’t just about improving my writing abilities; it was about understanding how content creation and distribution impact a brand’s visibility and engagement with its audience. It prepared me for the fast-paced world of digital marketing and gave me the tools to contribute meaningfully to marketing campaigns.
